Payday loans in South Africa

A payday loan is a small, short loan repaid in one go on your next pay date. In South Africa it falls under the National Credit Act's rules for short-term credit: up to R8 000, repayable within six months, with interest and fees capped by regulation. Every lender offering one must be registered with the National Credit Regulator, and every one of them has to assess whether you can afford the repayment before paying out.

That last part matters. A payday loan is the most expensive form of regulated credit you can take, and the shorter the term, the harder the fees bite: on a R2 000 loan repaid in 30 days, the fees alone can be almost double the interest. This page shows you what the law allows a lender to charge, compares the registered lenders that offer payday-style loans, and explains when a short-term loan over two or three months is the better call.

Matching services: one form, several lenders

These are not lenders. Each takes one application and passes it to a panel of registered credit providers, who then decide, quote and pay out. The agreement you sign is with the lender, and every lender still runs an affordability assessment.

What a payday loan is legally allowed to cost

Three things make up the cost. Interest, capped at 5% per month on your first short-term loan in a calendar year and 3% per month on any further short-term loans that year. An initiation fee of R165 plus 10% of the amount above R1 000, capped at R1 050 before VAT. And a monthly service fee of up to R60 before VAT. Credit life insurance may be added on some loans, capped at R4.50 per R1 000 owed per month.

Put those together on R2 000 for 30 days and the legal maximum is roughly R100 in interest, about R305 in initiation fee with VAT, and R69 in service fee — around R2 474 to repay. The interest is the small part. That is why comparing lenders on the interest rate alone tells you little; compare the total repayable for your amount and date.

How the lender must assess you

The Act requires an affordability assessment before any credit is granted. Lenders check your income, your existing debt and your credit record, and they may ask for payslips or bank statements. A lender advertising loans with no assessment is either unregistered or breaking the law, and in both cases you have no protection if things go wrong. Registered lenders show an NCRCP number; you can check it against the NCR's public register.

When a payday loan is the wrong tool

If you cannot repay the full amount from one salary without borrowing again, a payday loan turns into a cycle: each new loan carries a new initiation fee. A short-term loan repaid over two or three months costs more in total interest but spreads the instalment, and the initiation fee is charged once. If you bank with Capitec, FNB or another bank that offers in-app credit, check that first — bank pricing on small amounts is usually well below the short-term caps.

If you are under debt review, you cannot legally take a payday loan at all, and a lender that grants one is lending recklessly. See our page on loans while under debt review.

Applying and getting paid

Online lenders decide in minutes and pay out the same day once approved, though your bank's clearing times decide when the money actually lands. Have your ID number, bank account and recent proof of income to hand. Pick a repayment date on or just after your pay date, and set the debit order for that day rather than a day earlier: a failed debit order costs you a bank fee and can put you into default.

Questions people ask

How much can I borrow with a payday loan?

Short-term credit is capped at R8 000 by the National Credit Act, but most lenders cap first-time customers far lower — typically R500 to R4 000 — and raise the limit after you have repaid on time.

Are payday loans legal in South Africa?

Yes, as short-term credit transactions under the National Credit Act, provided the lender is registered with the NCR and follows the interest and fee caps. Unregistered lending is illegal.

Can I get a payday loan with a bad credit record?

Some registered lenders will lend to people with a poor record if the affordability assessment passes, usually at smaller amounts. No registered lender can skip the assessment.

What happens if I can't repay on the date?

Contact the lender before the date. Most will reschedule for a fee; a bounced debit order adds a bank charge and default interest. Rolling the loan into a new one adds a new initiation fee, which is how costs spiral.
