No credit check loans: why no registered lender can offer one
Every credit provider registered with the National Credit Regulator must assess your ability to repay before granting credit. That assessment includes checking your credit record, so a 'no credit check loan' from a registered lender does not exist. The phrase survives because it is searched for hundreds of thousands of times a year, and because unregistered lenders and lead-selling websites use it to collect applications.
What does exist is a range of registered lenders that check your record but do not decline automatically on a poor one, and lenders that run a 'soft' enquiry first, which does not show on your record as an application. This page explains the difference, what the Act requires, what reckless lending means for you if a lender ignores it, and which of the lenders we compare consider impaired records at small amounts.

What the National Credit Act requires
Section 81 of the Act prohibits a credit provider from entering into a credit agreement without first taking reasonable steps to assess the consumer's understanding of the costs, their debt repayment history, and their existing financial means and obligations. The affordability regulations spell out what must be considered. A lender that skips this is lending recklessly, and a court can set aside a reckless agreement — but you should never rely on that.
Soft check versus hard check
A hard enquiry is recorded on your credit record as a credit application and other lenders can see it. A soft enquiry, used for pre-qualification, is not. Several online lenders run a soft check to show you an indicative amount before the full application, so you can shop around without collecting enquiries. It is still a credit check; it just does not leave a footprint.
What 'no credit check' adverts are really selling
Three things. Lead resellers collect your details and sell them to lenders who then run the check anyway. Unregistered lenders lend outside the Act, with no fee caps and no protection. And occasionally a registered lender advertises the phrase loosely to mean it considers poor records, which is legal for the loan but not for the advert. If a website asks for a fee before the loan, or does not show an NCRCP number, close it.
What to do if your record is the problem
Read our bad-credit page for which lenders consider impaired records and what falls off your record when. If you bank with a lender that offers in-app credit, your transaction history counts for a lot. And if the reason you want to avoid a check is that you are under debt review, a new loan is not possible until you have a clearance certificate.

Questions people ask
›Is there any legal loan with no credit check?
No. Registered lenders must assess affordability, which includes your credit record. Pawn transactions are the closest thing, because the item is security, and they are regulated separately.
›What is a soft credit check?
A pre-qualification enquiry that does not appear on your record as an application. It lets you see an indicative amount without a footprint.
›Can a lender that skipped the check chase me for the debt?
A court can declare an agreement reckless and set aside some or all of your obligations, but that takes a court process. Do not borrow expecting this protection.
›Why does this page compare lenders at all?
Because people searching for this phrase usually need a small loan with a weak record. The lenders below are registered, check your record, and some consider impaired records at low amounts.
