1-hour payday loans: who actually pays out that fast

A one-hour payday loan is a small short-term loan where the lender promises to pay out within about an hour of approving you. Several registered lenders do that in business hours: CreditBar says within about an hour of approval, and LendPlus, PrimeLoans and CrediWise say fifteen minutes to two hours, or instantly to an eWallet at any time. What none of them can do is skip the affordability assessment. The 'no credit check' half of this search comes from unregistered lenders and lead resellers, and a registered lender that advertises it is misdescribing its own product.

So the honest version of the promise is this: apply online with your ID, bank details and proof of income, get a decision in minutes, and, if you are approved before the lender's afternoon cut-off on a business day, have the money within the hour or the same day, depending on your bank. This page compares the lenders that publish their payout times, shows the legal maximum a one-month loan can cost, and explains the three things that stop the hour being an hour.

Borrowing money costs money — only borrow what you can afford to repay. Matching services: one form, several lenders

These are not lenders. Each takes one application and passes it to a panel of registered credit providers, who then decide, quote and pay out. The agreement you sign is with the lender, and every lender still runs an affordability assessment.

Where the hour actually goes

The clock most lenders quote starts when they approve you, and approval needs three things: your application, a passed affordability assessment and, for most lenders, a signed DebiCheck mandate, which your bank asks you to authorise in its app or by USSD. Miss the mandate notification and the loan sits waiting. Century, for example, pays the same business day once the mandate is confirmed, and not before.

Then the transfer. A payment between the major banks usually reflects within a couple of hours on a business day; a payment sent after the afternoon cut-off can reflect the next morning, and one sent on a Friday evening can mean Monday. This is why the lenders on the LendPlus platform offer an eWallet payout: it lands in minutes at any hour, and you draw the cash at an ATM. Jabulani Money says its transfers typically post within five minutes.

What 'no credit check' means on this search

Every credit provider registered with the National Credit Regulator must assess whether you can afford the repayment, and that assessment includes your credit record. There is no exemption for speed. Lenders that decide in fifteen minutes do it with automated bureau checks and bank-statement analysis, not by skipping the check. A site that promises money in an hour with no check is either unregistered, with no fee caps and no protection, or a lead reseller that will pass you to a lender who checks anyway. Our no-credit-check page explains the difference between a hard and a soft enquiry if your record is the worry.

The legal maximum for a one-month loan

Short-term credit is capped by regulation: interest at 5% a month on your first short-term loan in a calendar year (3% on any further ones that year), an initiation fee of R165 plus 10% of the amount above R1 000, and a service fee of R60 a month, both plus VAT. On R1 500 repaid in 30 days that is about R75 interest, R247 initiation fee and R69 service fee: R1 891 to repay. On R3 000 it is roughly R150, R420 and R69, or R3 639. Fees, not interest, are most of the cost, so a lender's rate tells you little. Compare the total repayable for your amount and date, and check it against the calculator below.

Getting approved first time

Have your ID number, the bank account your salary is paid into and your latest payslip or three months of statements to hand. Apply from the account you are paid into: most fast lenders read your statements electronically, and a mismatch means a manual review. Ask for an amount you can repay from one salary; first loans are capped at R4 000 or R5 000 by the lenders we compare regardless of what you request. And pick a repayment date on or just after payday, because a failed debit order adds a bank fee and can put you into default before the loan is a month old.

Questions people ask

Can I really get a payday loan in one hour?

In business hours, yes, if you are approved and sign the debit mandate promptly. CreditBar publishes an hour from approval; LendPlus, PrimeLoans and CrediWise publish 15 minutes to 2 hours, or instantly to an eWallet. Outside business hours the eWallet route is the only one that keeps the promise.

Is a 1-hour payday loan with no credit check possible?

Not from a registered lender. The affordability assessment, which includes a credit check, is compulsory under the National Credit Act. Fast lenders automate the check; they do not skip it.

How much can I borrow on a first loan?

Between R500 and R4 000 or R5 000 with the registered lenders we compare, depending on the lender. Limits rise after you have repaid on time; PrimeLoans, for example, goes up to R8 000 for repeat customers.

What if I need the money on a Saturday?

Bank transfers approved over a weekend usually reflect on Monday. Lenders on the LendPlus platform pay to an eWallet at any time, which you can cash at an ATM within minutes. Check the lender's stated hours before applying.
