Cash advance in South Africa: the three kinds, and what each costs

'Cash advance' means three different things in South Africa, and they cost wildly different amounts. A salary advance is money your employer pays you early against wages you have already earned; many employers charge nothing. A credit card cash advance is a withdrawal against your card limit, charged interest from the day you draw it and usually a withdrawal fee. And a payday advance from a lender is a short-term loan of a few hundred to a few thousand rand repaid on your next pay date, which is the product most people mean when they search for a short loan.

Only the third kind involves the lenders on this page. It is also the most expensive per rand, because the fee structure set by the National Credit Act hits small amounts hardest: the initiation and service fees are almost the same on R500 as on R2 000. This page works through the legal maximum at small amounts, tells you which of the other two kinds to try first, and compares the registered lenders that lend from R500.

Matching services: one form, several lenders

These are not lenders. Each takes one application and passes it to a panel of registered credit providers, who then decide, quote and pay out. The agreement you sign is with the lender, and every lender still runs an affordability assessment.

Why small advances cost the most per rand

Short-term credit allows interest of 5% a month on your first short-term loan of the year, an initiation fee of R165 plus 10% of the amount above R1 000, and a service fee of R60 a month, both plus VAT. On R500 for 30 days the interest is R25 but the fees are about R155: R680 to repay, or 36% of the loan in a month. On R1 000 it is R50 interest and about R242 of fees. On R2 000, R100 and about R374. The fees barely move; the loan does. If you need R500, a lender's advance is the worst-value credit legally available, and a salary advance or a bank overdraft of the same size will cost a fraction of it.

Salary advance: ask before you borrow

A growing number of employers offer earned-wage access through payroll, and many that do not will still advance a portion of wages to a long-serving employee on request. Because it is your own money paid early, it is not credit under the Act: there is no interest and no affordability assessment, only whatever admin fee the employer or its provider charges. Ask HR. The answer is often no fee at all.

Credit card and overdraft advances

A cash withdrawal on a credit card attracts interest from the day of the withdrawal at the card's rate, plus a cash-withdrawal fee, but no initiation fee and no monthly service fee beyond the one you already pay on the card. For a few hundred rand over a few weeks that is far cheaper than a lender's advance. An arranged overdraft is similar. Both need a limit you already have; neither is available if you are at your limit or in arrears.

Payday advance from a lender

If the first two are not open to you, the registered lenders below lend from R500 with a decision in minutes and payout the same day in business hours. LendPlus, PrimeLoans and CrediWise structure the loan over two to three months rather than a single payday, which spreads the instalment but adds a service fee for each month; CreditBar offers 7 to 45 days. Borrow once, for the full amount, on the shortest term you can repay from one salary. A second loan means a second initiation fee, which on small amounts is most of the cost.

Questions people ask

What is a cash advance?

Either an early payment of wages from your employer, a cash withdrawal against a credit card limit, or a small short-term loan from a lender repaid on your next payday. The first is usually free; the last is the most expensive.

How much does a R500 cash advance cost from a lender?

Up to about R180 for 30 days at the legal maximum: R25 interest and roughly R155 in initiation and service fees with VAT. Fees dominate on small amounts.

Can I get a cash advance on the same day?

From a registered lender, yes, in business hours: decisions in minutes, payout within hours or instantly to an eWallet. A salary advance depends on your employer's payroll run.

Is a payday advance the same as a payday loan?

In practice, yes: a short-term loan repaid on your next pay date. Lenders use both names, and both fall under the National Credit Act's short-term credit rules.
